Who is burning with this Love for God.......

When you burn something, there is a residue that stays, but when Love consumes, nothing stays. For example, when you take the life of any great Saint, who is burning with this Love for God; they don’t see anything, they just see the Divine. I always take the example of Meerabai – have you heard about Meerabai? No?  She is a 15th  century saint of India. She was a model of bhakti; she was a model of devotion and surrender. Like her there are many, but she was a princess who loved Krishna with all her heart. There

is not even a single cell in her that was not in Love with Krishna. One day she was sitting in the temple and was singing for Krishna; whenever she would sing for Krishna, people would see Krishna, standing next to her. The King disguised himself. He was a Muslim king, Akbar, so he disguised himself and he was so touched by the devotion of Meerabai, that he gave his pearl necklace to the temple. Of course Meerabai didn’t take anything. Because of that, her father-in-law got very angry. As she was a princess, the father-in-Law was a king; so he said “Because you have sung in the temple and the enemy has come, we accuse you of treachery.” Meera said “Well, in the temple everybody is equal, I don’t know any bad one or good one, the fight is between you, not between God. Whether the person is Muslim, Christian, Hindu; everybody is allowed in the temple. The Lord is for everybody.” For that they said “We command you to drink poison.” She said “OK, if you have condemned me for that, I accept it.” So they brought the cup with the poison for her. As she was drinking it, she thought of Krishna, she thought that Krishna is giving her Divine nectar – amrit – to drink. She drank this poison, and she walked to the nearby temple of Krishna. Everybody followed her. She entered the temple and as she had the effect of the amrit, she became one with her Lord. She disappeared physically into the deity in the temple. Even the poison didn’t stop her. How did she view the poison? She accepted it.

Let yourself just slide in this Divine energy....

By singing the name of God, any aspect, Krishna, Jesus, Allah – it has to be sung with devotion and Love. It is nice when you join together and sing the name of God, it creates this vibration, it creates this urge of merging in God. That’s why it is very important, wherever you are, find a few people and sing. If you don’t know how to sing, just recite Divine names. When you recite the names, picture the form of the Divine in your mind. Keep concentrating on the form and let yourself flow, let yourself just slide in this Divine energy. And enjoy it! Remove all the darkness from the mind, remove all the barriers and just jump into it.  Bhakti! There are different ways of attaining God, but one way is bhakti – devotion! You can have devotion to the Guru, complete surrender to the Guru’s feet. Devotion has no limit.  Remove the “I”, let you and God merge together. Like sugar, when merged with water, they become one. In the same way, let yourself merge together and disappear in the Love of God. There will be no sugar; there will be no egoism that separates man from being Divine, because only the Divine exists. Only the universal consciousness of man exists.

It is said that devotion has another name: one single-pointed mind.....

The Love that the devotee has for the Satguru, the Love that the devotee has for the Divine. This Love

is one single-minded Love. This Love is a Love where the devotee doesn’t expect anything, apart from the Lord Himself. And, in this Love, nothing can move the bhakta, no matter what comes! When

Meerabai was singing for Krishna, people would say “She’s crazy”, but this didn’t change her faith, this didn’t change her Love. She was so concentrated. Her mind was so focused and one-pointed toward the Lord, that nothing could move her. It is said that devotion has another name: one single-pointed mind. When your

mind is completely focused on God, you will have Him.

You will always long for more and more .....

When this Love gets awakened, the longing, it’s like when you give a nice cake to somebody. You will always want this cake again.
It’s the same thing once you discover the Love of God in you and around you, you will always long for more and more and this longing crosses over the body, mind and intellect. Then the soul reveals itself.
Very often when people talk about the soul, it’s just mere words, because the soul in itself is very shy, in the same way that God is very shy.
That’s why He shows Himself from time to time only. Until Love reaches a certain degree inside of you, the soul doesn’t reveal itself. 

Be aware that, even if you don’t feel it, the Divine is always with you. As you long for Him, He longs more for you.

The only desire that will ultimately fulfill you is Him....

Let your only desire be focused on God, because the only desire of mankind, the only desire of the Spirit, is God. All other desires have limits. When you desire something and you want to possess it, the moment that you get the thing that you had desired, all your feelings are gone. You start disliking this thing, because it is not the Ultimate.

The only desire that will ultimately fulfill you is God, because he is unlimited in everything. In addition, in this desire for God, you will never have a question, whereas with the other desires you always have questions. For example, if you start a business, the desire is great. You are very happy, because the main thing is to get money. What happens then? The question arises, how to get the money. When you get the money, the desire is still not fulfilled, because you will think how to get more. Then there will be other things, like how you will pay the people who are working for you, or how will you buy other things for your business to grow more? So in this game, you will always ask the question, how will I do this? You will never really be satisfied and really happy with yourself. That does not mean you should stop your business or should stop your work. It is important that you work, but it is also important that you work with non-attachment, a non-attached feeling. Work and surrender to the Divine. In the morning, praise the Lord and say: “I’m an instrument in your hands. Guide me, be with me!” At the end of the day, before you go to sleep, surrender everything, every action, even if it was not a good action. Analyse it and surrender it to the Divine. Be completely detached from whatever you do, and focus your mind on the Lord. There was a great poet, Adi Shankaracharya who said,“Bhaja Govindam, Govindam Bhajam Muramate.” Meaning, if mankind would realise how foolish mankind is... We do not realise that the Ultimate of everything is Govinda, is God. If man would realise that everything comes from the source, which is God, why not take the source itself? Why just want something that will be finished after some time?

Even Lahiri Mahasaya, who was a very great yogi, in one of his previous lives when he used to live with Mahavatar Babaji, he had the desire to have a golden palace, and this desire for this golden palace made him incarnate again on earth. Because of the grace of Mahavatar Babaji, his love, and really his compassion for everybody, Babaji guided him and fulfilled his wish during this life. When Babaji appeared to him, he materialised a very huge golden palace, with lots of diamonds and all the precious stones that you can imagine inside. He was very amazed with everything, and then Babaji de-materialized it. Just the same way he made it appear, he also made it disappear. When you fall at the feet of Babaji, think of Babaji and pray to him, “If You could create this big palace, if You are the source of everything, why will I need just a palace? Isn’t it better that I take you completely? You are the ultimate. You are the goal of all life. Let me have you!”

Realisation is not something outside that you can pick up from a tree....

When you chant God’s Name, you awaken this feeling of love. You awaken the Divine inside of you. Of course, it will not happen in one day because your mind has to be purified completely. Your trust has to build little by little. Your strength has to become more and more, then the Lord will shine through you.

Realisation is not something outside that you can pick up from a tree and say “OK, fine, I have it.” No, it is inside of you. When you have cleansed the outside, actually, your True Self reveals itself to the mind. When it reveals itself to the mind, this is when the dissolution happens – the dissolution of your identity, the dissolution of the mind itself. That’s why we talk of the merging of the mind and the heart and the spirit together. Then there is no you and me. There is only Him that dwells everywhere. He is the same Lord which dwells in everything around. The essence of the Lord is present everywhere. If one sees it, if one realises it, one’s life will change completely. For that you have to sincerely want it because that Love, it’s not just the kind of Love that says “I love you”. It’s a Love that consumes you. It’s a Love that burns your identity, that burns everything. Are you ready for that?

Sri Swami Vishwananda tells us a story .....

Once, in a town there was a shoemaker. He would make his shoes while chanting God’s name all the time. Whenever he would go to sell the shoes in the town, in the market, he was very sincere. He would tell the people, “Look, I bought the leather for 1€ by God’s Grace. I bought the nails for a few cents and I made a profit of 2 € on it and altogether it cost 5 €, by God’s Grace”. So, he was so sincere. In everything that he was doing, his mind was centred on God and he was accepting everything as God’s Grace. So the people saw this innocence and this love that he had for God and without any bargaining, they would buy the shoes. So it happened one day that, during the night, while he was sitting in his courtyard and he could not sleep, some robbers came and took him with them - they just kidnapped him. And after kidnapping him, they went to another house to rob it. When the owner of the house heard noises, the thieves left the man in the middle, with all the jewellery that they had stolen and they ran away. When the owner saw this innocent man with lots of things from his house, he said, “It’s impossible,” but as he saw that the man had all the jewellery with him, he doubted and he said, “Let me call the police”. He called the police, the police put the man - the shoemaker - in prison and the next day he was brought in front of the judge. And in front of the judge he said, “By the Grace of God, yesterday night I could not sleep. By the Grace of God I went outside of the house and, while I was sitting there, by the Grace of God some robbers came and kidnapped me. And, by the Grace of God, this man found me. And, by the Grace of God, he thought that I came to steal in his house. And, by the Grace of God, I am here”. But, seeing the innocence also, the judge said, “This man is not the one who has stolen. He has spoken the truth”. While coming out of the court, the shoemaker said to his friend, “It is by the Grace of God that I came out”. This shows that, very often, when we do things, we take everything for granted. We forget that behind all our actions, behind all that is happening, there is God’s Grace. And if we start seeing it in this way, we will be very happy. We will find peace in everything.

Only the Lord, only Him, nothing else

Focus on the true joy that you have inside of you. Focus on the Love of God that you have inside of you. Focus on the Divine, which is present inside of you and focus in a way that nothing on the outside can move you. No matter what comes, nothing can move you! Christ said it: Make your faith, build your faith on the stone. Be so strong that no wind can move you, that no wind can destroy this. Become a pillar of this faith. This kind of concentration you should have: when you’re focused, when you sit down for meditation, you don’t hear anything, you don’t think about anything, only the Lord, only Him, nothing else.

Love is a Great Teacher.....

There are four kinds of yoga – Bhakti yoga, Jnana yoga, Karma yoga and Raja yoga. Any of these four kinds of yoga, can lead someone towards Self-realisation. What is karma yoga? Selfless service – some will also say working. But that is just the karma not the yoga. Karma yoga is selfless service, selfless help. What is this selfless service? People do a lot of service, but selfless service is very rare. There is this part in the bible, where Christ said “When your right hand gives, your left hand should not know”– it is better you cut your left hand and throw it away. Selfless service means, that when you render service, you have to forget about it, the moment you have rendered this service. Does the mind forget about it? Very rarely. You see, when one does service, there is always an expectation. Even the expectation of “thank you,” or “thanks.” When one doesn’t get a “thank you” he becomes very upset, thinking “I have helped that person, but yet he didn’t even thank me for that!” But selfless service is not like that – when you render service, forget about everything. Deep inside of you, you are rendering service to the Divine, but you don’t expect the pride of knowing that you are rendering service to the Divine, to rise. So erase completely the expectations of the mind – and that is selfless service.

The next yoga is Bhakti yoga, which is considered one of the easiest yoga. In bhakti, the first step you make but in that form of yoga, the first step that you make, the Lord makes ten steps towards you. You know your goal in life. In karma yoga, you have to walk towards that goal, you have to climb to the peak of that mountain. In Bhakti yoga, you are flying towards that mountain with a helicopter. Then, the third yoga is Raja yoga. Raja yoga is divided into many forms of yoga. That’s where your spiritual exercises come, like Atma Kriya, Hatha yoga; all these yoga fall into the Raja yoga. In Rajayoga you come to the point where you go into Samadhi. If you do your sadhana sincerely, when you do your spiritual practice sincerely, you come to the point of the samadhi state. What is the state of Samadhi? I said there is a mountain; in the first one you have to walk up there, in the second one you fly there and the third one, you don’t even need to carry your body. By will, you are there. Many great saints or sages have reached that point, where they could be in many places at once with this will. Like Christ – a man wanted Him to heal his servants and he said “Lord come to me, to my house, You shall heal my servant.” Christ said “Go home, your servant is healed.” This is the state, where you have touched the cosmic consciousness; you realise the infinite of your true Self. The last yoga is Jnana yoga. I will ask you; what is Jnana yoga? – tell me please – (someone: knowledge, knowing who you are). Yes, knowledge. The knowledge of the Self. But real Jnana yoga; very often people think that Jnana yoga can be found in books or one may find it or by practising, but real Jnana yoga is to have the wisdom, not just to know it, but to have the wisdom, that what you are looking for is that the beginning is the end, and the end is the beginning. With these four forms of yoga, anyone can attain Self-realisation or God-realisation. Each one is free to follow whichever path of yoga one wants to.

The main aim is to awaken this Divine Love, because without Love, you will not do anything. The key of all of these four kinds of yoga, is just the Love, the core of the heart. A love which consumes everything, a Love which will liberate you.

A teacher is not here just to give you good things, he has to teach you.

Often we approach the Divine with........

Often we approach the Divine with such pride and in an egoistic way. We think that we can give Him everything, forgetting that everything belongs to Him already, and that the only thing that we can give to Him is our heart. And that’s the only thing He wants: this heart full of love and humility.

Isn’t that what each one of you wants, to feel the Love of God all the time?

“All kinds of expectations bring pain because the one real expectation, the real thing that our soul wants, is the True Love of God. And this ‘True Love of God’, we can only find through devotion within our heart. You can go to a Master and the Master can show you the way. But it’s upon each one of you to really desire God, to really yearn for God. Because as long as you don’t yearn for God, as long as you don’t really want Him, you will always be searching. You will always put one foot in one place and the other foot in another place. To find this real Love and realize this deep connection with God within oneself, one must practice Bhakti- devotion. When you surrender yourself full-heartedly and say, “God I want You. Reveal Yourself to me!” then God will reveal Himself. He cannot say, “No,” to you, because your Self cannot hide from yourself. This higher consciousness, that you have deep inside of you, can be revealed when your mind is centred on God. So yearn for God. Call from deep inside your heart, ‘God reveal Yourself to me! I know You are somewhere deep inside. From time to time, I do feel You. I know You are here. But I would like to feel You constantly, all the time. Isn’t that what each one of you wants, to feel the Love of God all the time?”

Sri Swami Vishwananda tells us a story .....

In India, there is a place called Puri, and there is a temple for Lord Krishna in the form of Jagannath. He is an aspect of Krishna, a funny one. Every year, there is a big festival where they bring the Deities out and carry them in the street. Millions of people gather there. All the people, even the King, would go and help to clean the street where they would be bringing the chariot of the Lord. It happened that one day, a very rich merchant came to Jagannath and, seeing the Lord together with his brother Balaram and sister Subhadra, he said to himself “This is just a mere wooden statue with big eyes and a big smile; it´s just a black statue.” Then he said, very proudly, “I will show how wealthy I am and I will give one hundred thousand rupees.” So he went to the priest and said, “Priest, I will donate one hundred thousand rupees to the temple to feed the Lord, but I have one condition: you have to use all this money for the food.” The priest thought, “How will I use one hundred thousand rupees only for the food? Even if I use the best ghee and all the best ingredients to make the prasad for the Lord, still the money will not be finished.” So, all the priests gathered together and started discussing “How could we finish one hundred thousand rupees for the prasad of the Lord?” Finally the high priest came to a conclusion: he said “OK, it seems that we can’t take any decision, but let Lord Jagannath Himself, Let Krishna Himself take the decision.” They went to the merchant and said “Listen, we haven´t come to a conclusion, but we will let the Lord Himself decide which kind of prasad He would like to have. Meanwhile, please stay with us until the Lord Himself tells us what kind of prasad He wants.” Three days went by and then the high priest had a dream. In this dream, Lord Jagannath appeared to him and told him what to say to the merchant. Of course, the Lord knew the pride which was inside the merchant and in which way he was offering the prasad to Him. So, finally, the priest went to the merchant and said to him “The Lord has come in my dream and said what kind of prasad He would like to have.” The merchant said very proudly “Yes, tell me.” The priest said “The Lord has demanded some betel leaves with some paste inside.” Then the merchant said “What? He wants only these leaves. But this is nothing.” So the priest said “Wait, I am not finished. The Lord has asked that inside these betel leaves there should be pearl powder. They should be smeared with the finest ground pearl powder.” And the merchant said, “Still, this is nothing for me.” But the priest said, “Yes, but the Lord said another thing also, these pearls that you will use should not be just ordinary pearls, they have to be pearls which come under the skin of the forehead of an elephant.” Then the arrogant merchant started to think “Yes, but how many elephants will I have to buy to be able to get just one pearl? I am offering one hundred thousand, but it will cost more than that.” He realised that he could not offer to Lord Jagannath what He was asking. At that moment he threw his very expensive turban at the feet of Jagannath, kneeled down and said to the Lord “Please, forgive me. Out of pride, I tried to bribe you. I know I can’t give you anything which is in the outside, but I offer you my heart.” And he changed completely. A few days later the Lord appeared to him in his dream and said “I am very pleased with your heart and this is the only thing that I want: a heart which is full of love and devotion.”

Sri Swami Vishwananda talks about........

We see how the world is nowadays. You see how the mind of man is working. I don’t say that there is just negativity or just positivity. There is a balance of both, but people who are spiritual have the grace of God, and when you are spiritual, you awake this Divine Love within you. You try to know who you are, because you know the mind is limited by something and the body is limited by something. But there is the greatest force, which governs everything, which is deep inside of you, and this greatest force can’t be satisfied by anything in the outside, only by Pure Love, only by complete devotion to the Divine.

You have to lose yourself......

There are thousands of ways to meditate, but try to do what you feel calm and happy with. The main thing is that you have to lose yourself. Lose the identity that you have attached to your body. Remind yourself that you are just the spirit, just part of God. Certainly you will realise it through practice and discipline. Not many people like this word, ‘discipline’. It seems so. Discipline is not something which should scare you, but you should be disciplined with yourself. Because when you start enjoying the love of God within you, it is you who will enjoy it – it’s nobody else first. So it is the same with the discipline, you have to be disciplined yourself. You have to really want it! All right?

When I am talking about devotion....

What I have to say is all about Love and devotion. All that we do in our daily life, in our work, in our spiritual path, it´s all to attain one thing: the purity of Love, to become Self-Realised, but you cannot attain this purity, you cannot Realise the Self without devotion. It’s possible only through bhakti, through devotion. Without bhakti, it’s difficult. Like Sri Krishna said in the Gita “Cast away all dogma. Cast away all that is from the mind and surrender to me.” Only then True Love can be Realised. The Jnanis, they stick only to the mind. I don’t say that it´s not good. It´s good, but it will lead you only to a certain level. It is very good to help, to do karma yoga, but if you are not helping with the right attitude, it will also bring you only to a certain level. Whereas with bhakti, like Sri Krishna said to Uddhava: Above all the yogas, I prefer bhakti yoga. I prefer the yoga of devotion, where the devotee and the Lord become One; where there is no difference left, whereas in all the other yoga, the difference stays.” When I am talking about devotion, I don’t mean the kind of devotion that will fade after one month, but pure devotion that lasts forever. There are lots of people who have devotion in the beginning. When they start their spiritual path they are very excited but, after some time, their devotion fades. But real devotion is like the Lord said: If you surrender to me, open your heart and say “Lord, take complete possession of my heart. It’s only you that I’m looking for.” In reality, all the happiness that you are looking for - whatever you are doing in the outside - is to achieve Satcitananda. Wherever you look, whoever you look at, they are all running towards this. The priest is praying, but why do you think he is praying? He is praying for real happiness. People on their spiritual path are, also, looking for real happiness. Even people who are taking drugs: why do you think they do that? They are looking for real happiness. too. Of course, our mind doesn’t see it in the same way, but in the end, they are looking for real happiness. And this real happiness lies deep inside of you. Through devotion, through singing the glory of God, all the dogma will be removed and you will feel that He is continuously present with you. You will feel His Love continuously with you. The more you feel Him, the more you become part of Him. Like it is said, also, in the Gita: When one chants the name of God, the Lord takes full possession of that person. The more you lose yourself, the more you lose your ego and pride, the more you will Realise the Divine, but the more you hang onto pride, the more you hang onto identity, the less you will find real happiness. So the easiest way that the Lord has given to us is to sing His glory. Just sing any Divine Name and, when you sing, let yourself be drawn into it and don’t try to think with the mind.

He is just sitting inside your heart....

When you surrender the mind to the Divine, bhakti will arise, devotion will arise. And when devotion arises, the purity of Love will also arise together with it. It´s not a love where we just say “I love you, I love you”. It´s a Love where when we say “I love you”, there is no condition in it. It is not “I love you because of something. I love you because of your body. I love you because of your wealth. I love you because you are beautiful outside and if I pull the skin from your body, I don´t love you anymore”. But it’s because when you say “I love you” you love Him the way He is. And that´s the purity of Love, the Unconditional Love, the way God loves, the way your heart knows how to love. That´s why you do feel Love, but the moment you start to put conditions to that Love, it fades. But when you stick to this purity of Love, and make this Love grow, it will grow. Because Love is like a seed, which is inside the heart of man: the seed has to grow, has to blossom, also. It has to germinate and grow big; the seed can´t just stay like that. That´s what Christ said, also. There are so many similarities between Hinduism and Christianity. Christ said: If you plant a seed on a stone, it will never grow. But if you plant it in the heart of man it shall grow.” And this is the Love in the heart of man, when real Love is felt, when real Love starts to grow. It grows in six different stages, which are called: Sneha Prem, Pranaya Prem, Mana Prem, Raga Prem, Anuraga Prem, and Maha Bhav. These stages of Love - of course, I will now not go to detail about it - grow when this purity is there, which leads you to complete surrender to the Divine. But first, what is in regard to normal life, is to calm the mind and let Love itself start to grow inside of the heart. Only through this Love will you know who you are. And this is not up to me to tell you, it’s up to you to make the first step. The easiest way to calm the mind is to sing the Name of God, because you can sing the name of God anytime, wherever you are. So, I would like to chant Om Namo Narayanaya, because Om Namo Narayanaya, this mantra is so powerful that it raises you, it raises your spiritual consciousness to a very high state. Also, it helps you in your material life and it gives you calmness in the mind. This is one name of God. Of course, there are many names of God that

you can chant, you know, that create the same happiness. So, chant it every day, wherever you are, whatever happens to you, just chant Om Namo Narayanaya. You will see how close the Divine is. He is just sitting inside your heart, you know. You just need to bring Him out and let the Divine Love awaken inside of you.

Devotion

Devotion is so sweet that the Lord becomes the devotee's slave. Devotion is so sweet that all impurities are washed away. Devotion is so sweet that all duality vanish, letting you merge in the Divine.

Sri Swami Vishwananda tells us today.....

Look at Mirabai, one of the devotees of Krishna. Do you know her story? Some of you might know it, and some of you don’t. She was a queen, and her love for Krishna was so great, it was beyond everything. When she got married, she said to her husband, “My love for Krishna is beyond all your love, that you can understand. I see Him in you and in all of you who are around.” Whenever she used to sing Krishna’s name or sing a bhajan, he was present there. Such was her love that the Divine manifested Himself there.

Whenever you call from deep within your heart, whenever you call any aspect of the Divine, the Divine will take that aspect and come to you. Mirabai’s love was so great that at the end of her life they blamed her for so many things – but she was fixed and steady on her Krishna.

There was a lot of jealousy around her. But this is normal. You see, when you have a power point, all the souls around want the same thing.

Sri Swami Vishwananda tells us a beautiful story .....

There was once a boy who went to see God and on the way he met a great Sadhu standing on one leg with the hand up. So when he went to meet God, the Sadhu said to him “As you are going to meet God, I have one question: Ask God when will I attain liberation?” So the boy met God and asked all the questions. On the way back he met the Sadhu, who asked “So…have you met God?”. He said “Yes, I met him.” And he said “What did God say?” The boy answered “Well, the Sadhu still has some karmic things to do. He still has to take birth three timesbefore attaining me.” Well, that moment he was very enraged and said “All my tapasya, all my sadhana that I have been doing and still I have to take birth three times!” But the boy was very calm and joyful. So the Sadhu said “Oh, I am sure you are your last time here.” The boy said “Oh, my dear Sadhuji, it’s not like that. Do you see this tamarind tree?” [ A leaf of the tamarind is very, very, very smalll, so there are billions of it] "I have to take as much births and then only I will attain Him." Then the Sadhu looked at him “ Are you stupid? Why are you so happy?” Then he said “Well, it doesn’t matter. I know that at the end I will attain Him.” At that moment he heard a Divine voice saying “Throughout all these tapasya the Sadhu had been doing, all the lives of this boy with the pure heart are erased and he attains ‘mukthi’. This shows that it’s not about how much one has done, but how one is doing it. Love has to be there. If you do things out of love, the Divine will run to you. You just need to do one step.
